I am so excited to have a new group of 6th graders in class this semester. They are so very eager to learn to type which is such an important skill for them to learn early.
Signed copies of the syllabus are now past due. If you see a zero in the grade-book for the signed syllabus, that means I have yet to receive it. If you need an additional copy of the syllabus, you can go to the Syllabus page of my website and down a copy to print.
We have begun to learn to use the home-row keys on the keyboard. I encourage students to pay attention to posture and technique when they are typing, especially if the are working on their lessons at home. We use keyboard covers in class so that the students cannot see the keys as they type which helps build their muscle memory.
I prefer students not work ahead in the lessons so that we can cover the correct fingers to be using when striking the keys. This is a key component of this class. I am looking more for accuracy than speed at this point because with practice, they will build their speed.
I like to brag about my past students. Last year, one of my students finished up my class typing 60 WPM (words for minute). Although this is a very high goal for them to achieve, they should be able to leave my class typing at least 25 WPM without looking at the keyboard.
I look forward to another successful semester.
